SC-09 CRUCES TRAIL. -2

The tour to las Cruces Trail begins when we pick up our clients at 6:00 a.m. and take the way to Soberania National Park.  We begin the trekking at 7:00 a.m., enjoying all the beauty  of this historic and natural trail.  We will go along it about 5 hours

Location: Las Cruces Trail is located along the Panama Canal, and in between Panama and Colon provinces.  It is 25 kilometers (miles) by road from Panama City.   The famous Las Cruces Trail (Camino de Cruces) preserves remains of the ancient stone pavement way

Biodiversity:  The humid forests along the trail, define its scenery with magnificent species like: Ceiba (Ceiba  pentandra),  Cuipo (Cavanillesia platanifolia), Oak (Tabebuia rosea) y Guayacan (Tabebuia guayacan).  In this forest full of vines, epiphytes and orquids, there are lots of Royal Palms (Scheelea zonensis), Nances (Byrsonima crassifolia) and Jobos (Spondias mombin) whose fruits feed a lot of birds and mammals.  More than 1,300 vascular plants have been registered on the forests, including some endemic species from Panama like Chirimoya (Annona spraguei), Guayabillo (Eugenia aliacea) and Reseco (Tachigali versicolor).

With 105 mammal, 525 bird, 79 reptile, 55 amphibian, and 36 fresh water fish species, this park is an important refuge for the fauna.
The birds are the protagonists.  The Crested Eagle (Morphnus guianensis) endangered species, the red headed parrot (Amanoza autumnalis), and the different species of colorful Trogons like the Violaceus Trogon (Trogon Violaceus) are the most noticeable of all.

About the mammals, we can find the jaguar (Panthera onca),  white tale deer (Odoicoleus virginianus),  agouti (Dasyprocta punctata), raccoon (Procyon lotor) and herd of peccary (tayassu tajacu).

Different species of monkeys occupy the top of the forest, including the little Mono titi (Saguinus Oedipus) and the evasive jujuna(Aotus lemurinus). Reptiles like the babillo (Caiman crocodylus) or the verrugosa (warty) snake (Lachesis mutus), amphibians like the common toad (Bufo marinus) or the salamander (oedipina parvipes), and fresh-water fish like the big-bellied shad(Brycon petrosum) or the catfish (Rhandia magnesi) compose part of the vertebrate fauna of this protected area.

The invertebrate are thousands.  It is easy to see the unmistakable arriera ants’ nests and trails. (Atta colombica) and identify the dangerous folofa ant(Paraponera clavata).
At the end of the tour, we will get on our vehicle to go back to our departure point.

 

Wear comfortable clothing, that cover the must possible your body.  Wear boots for hiking or sport shoes that cover all your foot.  Bring clothing for change at the end of the tour, repellent, hat and sun block.
